Bloor Station Market and Asylum Seekers Centre

Upon examining the site, we were immediately drawn to the triple arrangement of vacant sites that span the Bloor Go train tracks. We thus devised a structure that would bridge the train tracks, connecting the three sites to each other while simultaneously bridging the neighborhoods separated by the tracks. The sustaining elements of the structure are related by their crystal-like shape and their ability to be inhabited. They support a double canopy that shelters the market, acts as a source of renewable energy, and also creates an inhabitable space in between. Our design also allows for a clear division of areas (market, asylum centre, and workshop space) while also maintaining a definite connection between them. In relation to the larger site our design respects the division between residential and commercial location of each element of the centre appropriately. The market is easily accessible through streetcar system, and the centre as a whole facilitates navigation between both side of the tracks.
