Nocturne Elemental

The design process for this project was divided into two parts: one week of designing in an intensive studio setting, and one week of actualizing our design and constructing it on site. We built a temporary inhabitable structure whose body intertwines with the forces of nature under a cover of varied luminosity. The construction of this structure is based on traditional wood fabrication - steam bending and lamination. Further, the structure is self-supported to create a base layer of spacial form-making and a framework that allows for moments of ambiguity. The final design emerged from an abstraction of elements and reflects on the relationship between the cinematic (Nocturne) and the quality of lightness/body (Elemental). The exterior design was achieved by a projected mapping of the stars on Thursday, June 22nd, 2017 at midnight so that at that moment, the highest points of the structure would align with the stars. Through this approach, the exterior design team creates a new constellation. The interior is designed in contrast with the rigid exterior, instead achieving a softer and more organic aesthetic and spatial experience.
